Q: What is a glass splashback?
A: A ‘glass splashback’ is a common term used to describe a coloured glass surface. A glass Splashback is designed for use in a range of architectural settings including kitchens, bathrooms, bars and resturaunts. The glass is painted on the reverse side to create a beautiful surface that is durable, long lasting and highly reflective.
Q: Where can I use this product?
A: Though the product is commonly used in kitchens, you can use apply it almost anywhere. The Splashback Company have manufactured coloured & printed glass for use in furniture, as outdoor feature walls, in elevators and even as artwork.
Q: What types of glass are available?
A: There are two standard types of glass available:
Clear Glass – is the regular glass that you see in windows and doors. If you paint the reverse side of Clear Glass white, the finished surface will have a green tint. The green appearance is caused by the level of iron in the glass. If you paint the glass a dark colour, the green tint is not apparent.
Starphire Glass – Is a premium quality low iron glass. If you paint the reverse side of Starphire Glass white, the finished surface will be a similar white colour. This product is perfect for matching colours, achieving white and light tones and also for bright colours.
There are two additional products available exclusively to The Splashback Company:
Prosatin – Is a matte finish glass with a non reflective surface. Available in Panther Black and Shadow Prosatin is the perfect addition to strong contemporary design.
Everprint Glass – Printed imagery, full colour photos, patterns and artwork captured on glass. We can provide imagery or you can supply us with you own digital files. Everprint Glass is perfect for glass signage and advertising. Everprint Glass has featured in projects ranging from small residential splashbacks to full scale commercial installations.
Q: How thick is the glass?
A: Typically, all glass splashbacks are 6mm. This allows the glass to be light enough to be easily handled, whilst maintaining true colour, accuracy and durability.
Q: Is the glass toughened?
A: All of our splashbacks are toughened – which means the glass has been through a process that leaves it 4 -5 times stronger than regular glass. Hence a 6mm Splashback is as strong as a regular piece of glass around 30mm thick. The toughening process also leaves the glass resistant to heat which means that it is suitable for use behind a cook top.
Q: What do the joins look like?
A: We have developed the best techniques in the industry for measuring our glass – this allows us to have extremely tidy looking joins. Although we install glass panels of up to 5 meters long in one piece, it is not always possible to make a splashback without joins. Around windows and anywhere that there are extreme shapes we usually allow for a join.
Q: What about power points, phone plugs or intercom systems?
A: All of these are simple additions to your Splashback. A simple hole is cut (smaller that the power point, outlet or intercom) to allow the devices to sit cleanly on the surface of the glass. This is all part of the regular installation process.
Q: I want a splashback, what do I do now?
A: If you are ready to go, contact us and we will send out a measuring technician to do an accurate site measure. At this stage, we will identify any imperfections in the destination surface and sign-off on the design of the Splashback. We can also advise you on colour at this stage. We will use these measurements to create the most suitable & accurate design.
Q: I have a specific colour in mind, can I match it?
A: The Splashback Company has a full colour matching service. This means that you can provide us with a colour chip or with a sample of some kind and we can have it matched with a high level of accuracy. We can match metallic and pearl finishes and we can also achieve high resolution photos and patterns in the glass. The finish is limited only by your imagination.
Q: How long will it take to manufacture?
A: The typical lead time for a glass Splashback is 10 – 12 working days. In some cases it can be quicker, although there is a curing process that the glass must go through post-paint and this takes time. Other products that are not toughened such as mirrors and cabinet glass are quicker but all toughened products require a little bit more time.
Q: How do you install the glass & how long will it take?
A: The Glass is applied to the destination surface using a neutral cure, mould resistant adhesive. This adhesive is fast drying and extremely strong. The installation usually takes between 30 minutes & 2 hours and is a clean process. Our technicians will guide you through the process prior to installation and explain to you how to care for the glass post installation.
Q: Do I need a fire resistant backing?
A: If the destination surface is behind a cook top, (gas or electric) less than 200mm from a burner and the surface is clad with standard plasterboard sheeting, then yes a fire resistant back is required. Glass conducts heat and although the glass is toughened and resistant to cracking, it will heat up quickly if it comes into direct contact with a hot pot/saucepan. Our technicians will cut a hole in the plasterboard approx. 300mm x 1100mm and replace it with a fire resistant material. This is a safety precaution, will not be seen, and will not affect the finish of your Splashback.
Q: How do you seal the gaps?
A: In most cases a specialised translucent silicone is used. Our experienced craftsmen are trained to achieve a highly accurate finish. In some cases a coloured silicone will be specified or an aluminum trim may be used to hide an uneven or bowing bench top. All of these elements will be communicated prior to the commencement of the project. Great care is taken at every stage to ensure the best possible result.
Q: How long do I have to wait before I can use the area?
A: It is recommended that you wait for a minimum of 24 hours before you begin to use the area. The adhesives used will gain strength within 8 hours, but will continue to fully cure for 5 to 7 days – it is recommended that you display caution during this time.
Q: How do I clean the product?
A: Cleaning is simple. We use mentholated spirits in a spray bottle – our installation technicians with demonstrate how to clean the product. Simply spray the glass in the middle and work the cleaning product out towards the edges. This will ensure a streak-free finish and keep any other surfaces dry.
Q: Is there a warranty on the glass?
A: A standard 24 month warranty is given with all splashbacks. This covers craftsmanship, caulking, paint surface, fading and also covers the glass against breaking due to heat exposure.
